Anne Neely: Close to the Bone
National Gallery of Art
documentary, digital series, 15 min, 2026 |
For three decades, painter Anne Neely has worked from a small studio perched above the rocky coast of Jonesport, Maine. What began as an effort to capture the beauty around her became a search for what the eye can't see: underground aquifers, fragile ecosystems, and the stories people carry about water. Through her long-running project Water Stories, Anne recorded hundreds of voices, from lobstermen like Sid Look to Lisa Marin, granddaughter of painter John Marin. She weaves these voices into her work. As the film unfolds, her inquiry into what is hidden and threatened in nature takes on a quiet, personal urgency.
